A moonlight walk of reflection

Thursday 23 May 2024

Following the success of our ‘in memory’ event in May, Candles on the Beach, we are now happy to announce our next event, Moonlight Walk. Remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones on the 8 June by walking together under the cover of moonlight and stars. While you walk – either the 5k ‘Half Moon Walk’ or the 10k ‘Full Moon Walk’ – you can also think of the staff on the twilight shift, making sure our patients are cared for in the In Patient Unit at all times.

Emma Powell, a Health Care Assistant at Jersey Hospice Care, who’ll be working while supporters are walking, said: “Working a nighttime shift is very different to a daytime shift. Often there are fewer loved ones around, so it’s a time where patients will reflect on their day, express their concerns, and need a lot more emotional support. It’s so important we’re there to provide that deeply individualised care and meet all of our patients’ needs.”

Both of the walks will begin at St Brelade’s Parish Hall at 21:00 and follow along the sea front. The Half Moon Walk will turn at Layby 7 (opposite Coronation Park) and head back to the parish hall, while the Full Moon Walk will turn at La Fregate and head back to the parish hall. Both groups will enjoy some well-earned tea and cake upon their return!

Emma said: “During a shift I can easily do 10 to 15 thousand steps. A 10k walk averages around 13 thousand steps – so while people are doing the Moonlight Walk, I’ll be doing the same and thinking of each and every one of you as I do my rounds in the In Patient Unit.”

Marina Brockbank, Community Engagement Officer at Jersey Hospice Care said: “By taking part in our Moonlight Walk and raising just a hundred pounds, that pays for a day’s worth of medical supplies for Hospice – both for our In Patient Unit and in the community. So not only are you walking for a loved one, but you’re making a difference by helping to fund the vital care we provide.”

The walk is kindly sponsored by Mitchell Building Contractors Limited.
