Recycle your Christmas tree

Friday 13 Dec 2024

Jersey Hospice Care has launched its Christmas Tree collection and recycling service for 2024 with new sponsor Rathbones.

Since 2005, the initiative has grown into both a successful fundraiser for the charity and a handy solution for many households and businesses in Jersey. Last year, more than 2,000 trees were collected.

Islanders are invited to sign up to the collection service for a minimum donation of £15, where Hospice volunteers will then pick up the registered trees from outside people’s homes and businesses in January. Organisers at Hospice are working closely with La Collette Green Waste Site who are kindly supporting the initiative and is where the trees will be recycled.

Scott Douglas, Events Officer, said: “Christmas tree collections is always a fantastic fundraising event to start the year. It’s a hassle-free way for people to make sure their tree is properly recycled, reduce car emissions, and help raise valuable funds for Hospice. We are so grateful to all our volunteers and supporters, including individuals and businesses, who continue to support us with the collection service and help make it possible. A big thank you also goes to Rathbones as without their support, this service wouldn’t be possible.”

Jonathan Giles, Managing Director of Rathbones in Jersey, commented: “Jersey Hospice Care provide an incredibly important service to our community and we’re proud to support their Christmas Tree collection and recycling scheme over the coming years. Through a variety of initiatives, Rathbones is dedicated to being an investor in the local community and looking at sustainable ways we can do this. This service gives us an opportunity to do both, and we are looking forward to a festive period filled with both goodwill and some successful New Year recycling.”

Christmas tree collections will happen on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 January for businesses in St Helier, and Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January for households (and businesses outside of St Helier). Organisers will be in touch with those who have registered closer to the time to confirm collection dates.

Businesses are asked to sign up by midnight Sunday 5 January and households by 09:00 Monday 6 January at trees.jerseyhospicecare.com.

Jersey Hospice Care is also on the lookout for volunteers with vans to help collect Christmas trees from across the island and deliver them to the green waste recycling facilities. Volunteers can email fundraising@jerseyhospicecare.com for more info or to sign up.
